Tableware from around the world: discover the iconic Duralex products in each country

Dishes from around the world: discover iconic Duralex products in each country

Duralex® glasses were born in France. And even today, all our tumblers are manufactured in our historic workshops in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, near Orléans.

But our tableware now travels to every corner of the globe. From China to the United States, through Brazil, it embodies French elegance.

Several of our glasses have become international stars. This is notably the case with the Le Picardie® tumbler, which can be found in museums and on the big screen.

However, specificities emerge from region to region. Today, we present to you our most popular glasses in Italy, Chad, and even Mongolia.

In France: Le Gigogne®

In France, the competition was quickly settled. The indisputable winner, your favorite from the beginning, is still Le Gigogne®, our star tumbler, with its generous curves and timeless design.

It is found on the tables of all school cafeterias, where generations of students have played guessing their age at the bottom of this iconic glass. But Le Gigogne® is also very present in our homes and even on the tables of fine restaurants.

In people's minds, it's the tumbler that bounces but doesn't break. And we all remember the sound this glass makes on the tiles. The secret of its strength? We use tempered glass, which is up to 6 times more resistant than regular glass.

In Spain: the green tableware

Duralex® glasses are also popular among our Spanish neighbors. To the extent that in 1956, when Real Madrid players arrived in Paris to compete in the European Cup, the first thing they did was buy Duralex® tableware.

In the Iberian Peninsula, more than a model, it's a color that wins the favor of Spanish households. Glasses, plates, bowls... There, our range of green tableware is available in abundance on all family tables.

If the Duralex brand is so popular on this side of the border, it's also because for a long time, a part of our legendary glasses was produced locally, in the small town of Azuqueca de Henares.

In Italy: the Amalfi cups

Change of scenery. We now pack our bags for Italy. In the land of la dolce vita, coffee is king. Most often, it is drunk in an Amalfi cup, on the terrace or at the counter, surrounded by friends.

These cups are rather small: their capacity does not exceed 17 cl. But it's more than enough for coffee. Especially since here, it is drunk black, very short, and very strong. So, to savor it better, it is sipped in small sips.

In Africa: the Provence glass and the Lys dish

And on other continents, what are the most appreciated Duralex® products? In Africa, two candidates stand out. First, there is the Provence glass, with its fine beveled facets and beautiful transparency.

In Chad, it is widely used to serve tea. But not just any tea. Because in this country, a very concentrated and very strong tea is drunk, almost like a "shot". It's a bit like the Italian coffees we talked about earlier.

In North Africa, it's the Lys vermeil serving dish that is most popular, with its warm and friendly colors that do not fade, even after years. It is used especially during family meals or celebrations, and especially during Ramadan.

In Asia: the ear-handled bowls and the Lys vermeil glass

Finally, Duralex® glasses are also exported to Asia. There, they are so well-known that they have already been copied by about ten companies. A Chinese company was even sentenced after selling counterfeits under the name of... Durelax.

In Mongolia, our best-seller is the ear-handled bowl. Children use it to drink Yak milk before going to school. The advantage of this timeless design is that the handles allow you to hold the bowl without burning yourself. And it's very sturdy.

In other countries, such as Thailand, it's the Lys Vermeil glass that breaks all records. It is used as a water glass, but also as a measuring glass for the preparation of elaborate coffees or teas, such as lattes, matcha, or affogato, especially because it resists thermal shocks.
